ACCESS Mental Health Project - 12 Workshops

Active Community Counselling & Emotional Support Service (ACCESS) is developing 12 workshops that will encourage the improvement of local people's mental health. One of these workshops is already being funded by MAV UK. Our Basis Yoga workshop is called "Breath Move Stretch." The first sessions started in January 2022.

The MAV UK Hulme Centre Hall hosted the 10 week programme, it was free at the point of access to those taking part. These sessions were open to local people.


MAV UK are committed to developing community activities that support the physical and mental health needs of the community. The Hulme Centre already supports activities for young people with regular dance classes. The Breath Move Stretch, is a welcomed addition to our community based services. We were happy to make this investment in local people and their mental health and wellbeing. The positive feedback given from those that attended encouraged MAV UK to fund a Spring Session Programme.


Breath Move Stretch is for people of all ages. For those going through an illness, recovering from surgery or living with a chronic condition, Breath Move Stretch became an integral part of the participants health and wellbeing.

Peter Ogazi worked with group members putting together plans that work to meet the needs of the group. This encouraged the healing process and helped the participants experience more centeredness and less distress. Slow movements and deep breathing increase blood flow and warmed up muscles, while holding a pose can build strength. Regular yoga based practice may reduce levels of stress and body-wide inflammation, contributing to healthier hearts.


Several of the factors contributing to heart disease, such as high blood pressure and excess weight, can also be addressed through yoga. According to the National Institutes of Health, scientific evidence shows that yoga supports stress management, mental health, mindfulness, healthy eating, weight loss and quality sleep.

We were so encouraged by the Winter Breath Move Stretch Basis Yoga Class that we have agreed a further 10 sessions. We have now invested in 10 mats for those that don't have the basic equipment but would like to attend.
