SMILES: Supporting Our Community and Youth

Updated: Oct 6

SMILES stands for Support, Motivate, Impact, Lead, Educate, and Safeguard

. This project aims to develop the skills of staff and volunteers over the next 16 months. It will create regular spaces for community engagement activities that support our goals of improving our natural, community, and youth support environments.

Key Objectives of SMILES

SMILES will provide opportunities for staff and the local community to better understand our natural environment. We will seek ways to improve Hulme Hall’s outdoor space and engage with our local council. The key outcomes are outlined below.

Enhancing Skills for Volunteers and Staff

  1. One of our primary goals is to improve the skills of volunteers and staff. We will provide access to training that helps motivate and educate them. This training will focus on areas that safeguard young people and their families.

Honouring Patsy McKie

  1. SMILES interventions will pay tribute to the life of Patsy McKie. Patsy started Mothers Against Violence 25 years ago after the tragic murder of her youngest son, Dorrie McKie.

MavUK was pleased to attend the recent Hulme Park Event, which was attended by the Lord Mayor. A beautiful plaque was laid in the park, featuring the name of Patsy McKie alongside other inspiring women who have positively contributed to Hulme.

Supporting Children and Families

  1. Our initiative aims to improve support for children in our local areas, including those with additional needs. We will develop support for parents and young people to work together. This collaboration will address issues that help reduce waste, foster an appreciation for local outdoor spaces, and engage young people in pro-social activities.

Reducing Anti-Social Behaviour

All SMILES interventions are committed to reducing anti-social behaviours in the community. This includes tackling issues such as fly-tipping, drug dealing, and other disruptive activities. SMILES will fund the development of interventions that support children and their parents.

Community Engagement Activities

Engaging the community is at the heart of the SMILES initiative. We will host various activities that encourage participation and collaboration among residents. These activities will not only foster a sense of belonging but also promote awareness of our natural environment.

Workshops and Training Sessions

We will organise workshops and training sessions for volunteers and staff. These sessions will focus on essential skills that can help them in their roles. Topics will include safeguarding, community engagement, and environmental awareness.

Outdoor Activities for Families

Families will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities. These events will encourage children to explore their surroundings while learning about the importance of caring for our environment.

Collaboration with Local Councils

We will work closely with local councils to ensure that our initiatives align with community needs. This collaboration will help us address pressing issues and create a positive impact in the area.

The Importance of Community Support

Community support is crucial for the success of the SMILES project. By working together, we can create a safer and more vibrant environment for everyone.

Building Stronger Connections

Through our activities, we aim to build stronger connections among community members. These connections will foster a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Encouraging Volunteerism

We encourage community members to get involved as volunteers. Volunteering not only benefits the community but also provides personal growth opportunities for individuals.

Conclusion

The SMILES initiative is dedicated to creating a positive impact in our community. By focusing on support, motivation, and education, we aim to safeguard the future of our youth and families. Together, we can honour the legacy of Patsy McKie while making a difference in our local environment.

Let us work hand in hand to create a brighter future for all.
