YOUTH ENRICHMENT

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme provides creative, physical and wellbeing activities for children and young people aged 5–18, focusing on engaging those from Black and racially minoritised backgrounds. The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme

Creative. Physical. Empowered. Inspired
Delivered by Mothers Against Violence UK (MAVUK)

About the Programme:

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme is a vibrant, inclusive, and purposefully designed initiative providing **creative, physical, and wellbeing activities** for children and young people aged **5–18 years old.**

At its heart, the programme exists to do something profoundly simple and profoundly important — to give every young person access to a **safe, inspiring, and nurturing space** where they can grow, thrive, and discover the very best of themselves.

It is never too early in life to start learning about mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing. A healthy and positive lifestyle for children is one that promotes physical, mental, social, emotional, and environmental health and wellbeing.

This understanding forms the bedrock of everything delivered through the [MAV UK] Youth Enrichment Programme.

With a particular focus on **engaging children and young people from Black and racially minoritised backgrounds,** the programme responds directly to the real and documented barriers that many young people from these communities face when trying to access support, opportunities, and enrichment.

Young people from racialised communities are less likely than their white peers to access a range of services, notably mental health services, and encounter a large number of barriers which may delay them from getting the help they need when they most need it.

The [MAV UK] Youth Enrichment Programme is a direct and determined response to this inequality — bringing enriching, affirming, and empowering opportunities directly into the heart of the community.

Why This Programme Matters?— The Context

To fully appreciate the significance of the MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme, it is essential to understand the landscape in which it operates.

Young people from marginalised communities are often left out of the mental health conversation. We want to change that.

Experiences of racism such as microaggressions and stereotyping in conjunction with structural barriers significantly influences the emotional wellbeing and mental health of young people from Black, Asian, and Latin American backgrounds.

There is still inadequate support for young people's mental health, particularly from communities of colour. The lived experiences and diverse cultural backgrounds of young people need to inform the services they access.

It is within this context that [MAVUK]'s Youth Enrichment Programme stands as both a **safeguard and a celebration** — meeting young people where they are, honouring who they are, and walking alongside them as they become who they are meant to be.

Programme Aims & Objectives:

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme is driven by a clear and compassionate set of aims:

- To provide **safe, welcoming, and inclusive spaces** where all young people feel seen, valued, and respected
- To deliver **high-quality creative, physical, and wellbeing activities** accessible to children aged 5–18
- To specifically engage and celebrate young people from **Black and racially minoritised backgrounds**
- To build **confidence, self-esteem, and a positive sense of identity** in every participant
- To develop **life skills, social skills, and emotional resilience** through purposeful activities
- To connect young people with **positive mentors and role models** who reflect their lived experience
- To act as an **early intervention** — reducing the risk of young people being drawn into violence, crime, or exploitation
- To foster **community belonging, cultural pride, and mutual respect** among participants
- To ensure young people are given a seat at the decision-making table, recognising that programmes co-designed and co-produced with young people from racialised communities are more likely to meet their needs

Our Environment — Safe, Inspiring Spaces:

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme is delivered from MAVUK's community base at **Hulme Hall Centre** — a warm, accessible, and community-rooted space that has been a hub of activity and support for over 25 years.

It is important to create an open environment where babies, children and young people feel listened to, understood and supported. Having regular conversations about mental health and wellbeing helps establish a culture of openness.

Every space within the programme is intentionally designed to be:

- **Physically safe** — a place free from threat, intimidation, or judgement
- **Emotionally safe** — where young people can express themselves freely and authentically
- **Culturally affirming** — honouring the identities, heritage, and experiences of Black and racially minoritised young people
- **Inspiring** — full of creativity, energy, and possibility
- **Consistent** — offering reliable, regular sessions that young people can depend on

Creative Activities — Unlocking Potential Through Expression:

Creativity is one of the most powerful tools for young people's development and wellbeing.

Creative activities can help a child's development by supporting their social, emotional, physical, cognitive and wellbeing needs.

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme offers a rich and diverse programme of creative activities, including:

Music Production & Performance:

Music is a universal language — and for many young people, it is the most natural and powerful form of self-expression available. Through music production and performance activities, young people develop:

- **Technical skills** in music creation, mixing, and production
- **Confidence** in performing and sharing their voice
- **Discipline and focus** through practice and creative process
- A platform to express their **identity, experiences, and aspirations**

Dance & Movement:

Dance sessions are a flagship activity within the [MAV UK] Youth Enrichment Programme, delivered for young people from as young as **5 years old** at MAVUK's Hulme Hall. Led by a team member with a BA in Dance and a passion for community engagement, dance sessions combine joyful movement with deep developmental benefits.

Movement provides an opportunity for cognitive development by contributing to neurological organisation in the brain and complex thought process growth, as well as intertwined communicative, emotional and social development. Bodily movement becomes a powerful tool for young children when learning to express themselves.

With dancing, drama and movement, there are many gross motor skills involved, including balance and spatial awareness.

Dance within the programme promotes:

- **Physical fitness and coordination**
- **Emotional expression and self-confidence**
- **Cultural connection** through traditional and contemporary dance forms
- **Teamwork and community** through group choreography and performance

Visual Art, Craft & Creative Projects:

Creative Health is an approach to address health and wellbeing through engagement in creative activities such as dance, drama, visual art, film making, and music.

Art and craft sessions within the programme provide young people with space to:

- **Explore their imagination** without pressure or judgment
- Process complex emotions through **visual and tactile expression**
- Build **fine motor skills, concentration, and patience**
- Develop **pride and ownership** over their creative work

Children are given the time and space to make things and experiment with a range of materials and child-friendly tools. Creativity is about enjoying the activity, not about the finished product.

Storytelling, Drama & Performance:

Creative storytelling sessions encourage everyone to add a part to the story — this activity encourages creativity, active listening, and collaboration while creating a fun and imaginative group experience.

Drama and storytelling activities help young people to:

- Develop **communication skills and emotional vocabulary**
- Build **empathy and understanding** for others' perspectives
- Process their own **experiences and narratives** in a safe and creative way
- Develop **confidence in public speaking and self-presentation**

Physical Activities — Moving Bodies, Building Minds:

Physical activity is not simply about fitness — it is a vital component of young people's **mental health, social development, and sense of self.**

Playing outside is one of the best activities for both children and adults that will promote good health and wellbeing. Not only is it great for physical fitness, stamina, balance and agility, it is also vital for good mental health.

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme integrates a range of physical activities tailored to different ages and abilities:

Football & Sports Programmes:

Football is at the heart of the physical activity offer at MAVUK, delivered by a highly experienced **FA-qualified football coach** with over 15 years of community sports experience. Football sessions go far beyond the pitch — they are spaces where:

- Young people develop **discipline, teamwork, and perseverance**
- **Positive competition** replaces negative peer pressure
- Young people from different backgrounds come together around a **shared passion**
- Physical health is built through **regular, structured, and enjoyable activity**

Promoting a 'mastery climate' — an environment where young people are encouraged to develop their individual skill levels and personal best — is key. Activities should provide opportunities to try a wide variety of activities, including some which are more likely to be attractive to those who are less sporty, such as creative activities like dance. Activities should be developmentally appropriate and use positive reinforcement to recognise effort and progress.

Sports Holiday Camps:

MAVUK organises **sports holiday camps** that provide young people with structured, safe, and energetic activities during school holiday periods — times that can otherwise leave young people vulnerable to boredom, isolation, or negative influences. These camps combine physical activity with wellbeing support, mentoring, and community building.

Yoga & Mindful Movement:

Yoga is a great form of exercise, as it encourages movement, stretching, relaxation and mindfulness.

As part of MAVUK's holistic approach, yoga and mindful movement are woven into the programme's physical activity offer. Through the **"Breath Move Stretch"** yoga programme — a free 10-week initiative hosted at Hulme Hall — young people learn to:

- Connect **body and mind** through intentional movement
- Develop **self-regulation and calm** under pressure
- Build **physical strength, flexibility, and body confidence**
- Practise **mindfulness and present-moment awareness**

Wellbeing Activities — Nurturing the Whole Child:

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme takes a **whole-child approach** to wellbeing — recognising that a young person's mental, emotional, social, and physical health are all deeply interconnected and equally important.

Introducing wellbeing at an early age helps to build resilience, empathy and kindness, and establish coping techniques when faced with new, challenging or stressful situations.

Wellbeing activities within the programme include:

Journalling & Reflective Writing:

Journalling is a great first step into a young person's wellbeing journey. When done correctly, it can greatly improve emotional development, self-esteem, confidence, and communication skills. As young people learn to express themselves in written form, they leave their thoughts, worries, and feelings on the paper, which helps them to process their emotions in a more effective way.

Goal-Setting & Self-Development:

Teaching young people how to set small, achievable goals for their wellbeing — guiding them to set simple goals related to their mental or physical health — builds confidence and self-motivation.

Through structured goal-setting activities, young people within the programme develop:

- A **positive and growth-oriented mindset**
- The ability to **plan, reflect, and take purposeful action**
- **Self-belief** in their capacity to shape their own future

Positive Self-Talk & Affirmations:

Practising positive self-talk — speaking kindly to yourself and building affirmations — builds confidence and fosters self-compassion.

This is particularly important for young people from communities that may face **systemic marginalisation and negative stereotyping** in wider society.

Cultural Celebrations & Heritage Activities:

MAVUK places enormous value on **cultural identity as a source of strength and pride.** Events such as **Kwanzaa celebrations** and other culturally significant activities are woven into the programme calendar, ensuring young people feel:

- **Proud of who they are and where they come from**
- **Seen and celebrated** within the programme community
- Connected to a **rich cultural heritage** that precedes and uplifts them

Young people from Black, Asian, and Latin American communities have good knowledge of mental health and wellbeing and take positive action to stay well. This can include creative activities, making time for themselves, finding strength in their faith, and drawing on the wisdom of older generations.

Mentoring & Positive Role Models:

One of the most transformative elements of the MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme is its investment in **genuine, meaningful mentoring relationships.** Young people are not simply programme participants — they are mentees, guided and supported by adults who truly understand and reflect their experience.

Young people have expressed the desire for services "run by younger people with real experience — who understood, looked like me, had their own experience of life, challenges."

MAVUK responds to this directly by ensuring that:

- Mentors are **drawn from the community** and reflect the cultural backgrounds of the young people they serve
- Staff and volunteers have **lived experience** of the challenges young people face
- Every mentor acts as a **positive role model** — demonstrating that success, dignity, and purpose are achievable
- Mentoring relationships are **consistent, compassionate, and built on trust**

Through years of delivering youth-focused programmes, a huge amount of insight has been generated into the unique role that youth work plays in improving young people's mental health and wellbeing outcomes.

The mentoring offer within the MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme includes:

- **One-to-one mentoring sessions** tailored to individual needs
- **Group mentoring circles** that build collective strength and peer support
- **Sports mentoring** through football coaching and physical activity leadership
- **Creative mentoring** through music, dance, and art facilitation
- **Career and life skills mentoring** for older young people aged 14–18

Building Confidence — From the Inside Out:

At the core of everything the MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme does is a commitment to building **genuine, lasting confidence** in every young person it serves.

Research conducted in school settings found that movement in the classroom built confidence and social skills.

Creative activities help kids develop social skills. Understanding that other people are different from us is a big learning stage for children. Creative activities help show children that others can do things differently to us, even with the same resources. It also enables a way of showing that it is OK to be different to others.

Through every activity, session, and interaction, young people in the programme are supported to:

- **Believe in their own abilities** and unique gifts
- **Take healthy risks** — trying new things, making mistakes, and growing
- **Speak up for themselves** and advocate for their needs
- **Support and celebrate one another** — building a culture of mutual uplift
- **Dream bigger** — seeing pathways to opportunity that may not have seemed visible before

The Programme Serves — Inclusion at Its Core:

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme is open to all children and young people aged **5–18**, with a particular and intentional focus on:

- Young people from **Black and racially minoritised backgrounds**
- Children and young people from **low-income or deprived households**
- Young people who are **not in education, employment, or training (NEET)**
- Young people **at risk of exclusion** from school or engagement with the justice system
- Children and young people who have experienced **trauma, bereavement, or violence**
- Young people who feel **isolated, overlooked, or disconnected** from mainstream services

Cultural factors in the family and community can lead to stigma being attached to both talking about mental health and accessing mental health services. Therapy may be seen by young people as for white, middle-class people.

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme deliberately breaks down these barriers by providing **community-rooted, culturally intelligent, and stigma-free** spaces for young people to access support and enrichment.

The Impact — What Changes When Young People Are Enriched:

The benefits of participation in the MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme are far-reaching and deeply meaningful:| **Area of Development** | **Observed Impact** | **Mental Health** | Reduced anxiety, improved mood, greater emotional resilience | **Physical Health** | Increased activity levels, improved fitness and body confidence |**Social Skills** | Better communication, empathy, teamwork, and conflict resolution |**Academic Engagement** | Improved school attendance, motivation, and attainment |**Cultural Identity** | Stronger sense of pride, belonging, and positive self-image | **Future Orientation** | Clearer aspirations, greater belief in personal potential |

Links to the Wider [MAVUK] Ecosystem:

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme does not exist in isolation. It forms a vital part of [MAVUK]'s broader network of services, ensuring that young people and their families can access joined-up, holistic, and comprehensive support ncluding:

- **[ACCESS]** — Counselling & Emotional Support for those affected by trauma and violence
- **[Fathers Against Violence (FAV)]** — Engaging fathers as positive forces in young people's lives
- **[Substance Misuse Service (SMS)]** — Support for young people and families affected by drug and alcohol misuse
- **Movement & Mindfulness Programme** — Therapeutic wellbeing through mindful movement and meditation
- **Road Map for Business Development** — Empowering older young people with enterprise and employment skills.

Summary — Our Promise to Every Young Person:

The MAV UK Youth Enrichment Programme is more than a timetable of activities — it is a **living commitment** to the children and young people of Greater Manchester. It is a declaration that every child, regardless of their background, their postcode, or the challenges they face, deserves to be:

- **Seen** — in their full humanity, culture, and potential
-**Heard** — given a genuine voice in the spaces that shape their lives
-**Supported** — with compassion, expertise, and cultural understanding
-**Inspired** — by mentors, role models, and possibilities they can believe in
- **Empowered** — with the confidence, skills, and resilience to write their own story

Giving young people the space and confidence to get their voices heard and change the world we live in means that together, we can create a world where no young person feels alone.

At MAVUK, we know that when young people are enriched — creatively, physically, and emotionally — **whole families heal, whole communities transform, and a brighter future becomes not just possible, but inevitable.**

Every child is an artist.

Every young person is a leader.

Every community is stronger when its young people are given room to grow.
