Nature Projects
Empowering Our Community Through the NATURE SMILES Project
It is a fundamental component of our SMILES Intervention service. SMILES is a youth-driven project with six key objectives: to provide Support, Motivate young people, make a positive Impact on their lives, empower them to Lead, Educate them, and Safeguard them from any form of violence prevalent in our community, including knife and gun crime.
Nature SMILES is dedicated to identifying and implementing practical solutions for enhancing our local environment. This project ultimately benefits everyone in our community. It is thoughtfully designed to empower young people to cultivate their creativity and develop innovative ideas that contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment.
We envision communities where everyone has access to welcoming green spaces that support wellbeing, encourage biodiversity and bring people together.
By working collaboratively with local people and organisations, we hope to inspire a greater appreciation of nature, strengthen community connections and create greener, healthier places for generations to come.
Nature With Michelle
Growing Stronger Communities Together
MAVUK and Neighbours Who Grow are working in partnership to transform underused outdoor spaces into welcoming, nature-rich environments where local people can connect, learn and thrive.
Together, we believe that community gardens are about much more than growing food. They can bring people together, improve physical and mental wellbeing, reduce social isolation and create meaningful opportunities for children, young people, families and older residents to participate in community life.
By combining MAVUK’s experience in supporting families, young people and communities with Neighbours Who Grow’s expertise in community-led gardening and environmental improvement, the partnership will create safe, inclusive green spaces that respond directly to local needs.
Working alongside residents, volunteers and community organisations, we will design and develop outdoor spaces that:
-
encourage biodiversity and nature recovery;
-
support community food growing;
-
provide opportunities for volunteering and learning;
-
promote physical activity, mindfulness and emotional wellbeing;
-
create safe places for people to meet, relax and build relationships; and
-
support social prescribing through meaningful, nature-based activities.

Supporting People, Communities and Nature
MAVUK and Neighbours Who Grow share the belief that healthy communities and a healthy environment go hand in hand.
By restoring neglected or overlooked outdoor spaces, the partnership will create gardens that are richer in nature and more valuable to the people who use them. Each project will be shaped through consultation and collaboration, ensuring that the space reflects the aspirations, cultures and priorities of the local community.
The gardens will support MAVUK’s wider work in violence prevention, family support, youth engagement, mentoring, mental health and community wellbeing. They will provide positive environments in which people of all ages can develop skills, build confidence, form new friendships and reconnect with nature.
Whether creating a new community garden, improving an existing green space or delivering gardening and wellbeing activities, MAVUK and Neighbours Who Grow will work together to achieve lasting environmental, social and health benefits.
Our shared ambition is to create spaces where people feel safe, valued and connected — places where individuals, communities and nature can grow together.
