Mothers Against Violence UK (MAVUK) has created a memorial garden and mural in loving memory of our founder, Patricia Hazel “Patsy” McKie.
Patsy was more than the founder of MAVUK. She was its heart, its driving force and a powerful voice for families and communities affected by violence. She transformed personal pain into meaningful action, bringing people together to challenge violence, support those experiencing loss and trauma, and create safer opportunities for children and young people.
Her courage, compassion and determination shaped MAVUK into the organisation it is today. Patsy believed deeply in the strength of community and in the possibility of healing, even during the most difficult times. Through her leadership, she gave hope to people who felt unheard, she encouraged others to stand together for lasting change.
A Garden of Remembrance and Hope
The memorial garden has been created with the help of young people and their families. It is a peaceful place for reflection, remembrance and connection. Its flowers and plants represent life, renewal and the lasting impact of a legacy that continues to grow.
At the heart of the garden is a commemorative plaque bearing Patsy’s image and the words:
“MAV UK is all the better for having you.”

These words express what so many people feel. MAVUK—and the wider Manchester community—is stronger because of Patsy’s dedication, leadership and love.
A Mural that keeps her presence Alive
Alongside the garden, a striking mural now celebrates Patsy’s life and contribution. Her portrait stands proudly at the MAVUK Hulme Centre, surrounded by vibrant colours and flowers. The mural ensures that Patsy remains a visible part of the place and organisation she helped to build. It serves as a reminder to every visitor, volunteer, young person and family that positive change often begins with one person who has the courage to act.
Continuing Patsy’s Mission. Creating our Own
Although Patsy is deeply missed, her vision continues through every person supported by MAVUK, every young life encouraged and every family given hope.
We honour her memory not only through this garden and mural, but also by continuing the work to which she devoted so much of her life: preventing violence, supporting healing, strengthening families and building safer communities.
We invite everyone who knew Patsy, worked alongside her or has been touched by MAVUK’s work to visit the memorial garden, take a moment to reflect and help us carry her legacy forward.
